If you want to build custom NodeMCU firmware for the ESP8266 (Wikipedia) I suggest you don't build it yourself but have it built by this configurable service. All you have to do is to define the branch from which to build and the user modules to include and... Hey Presto! there's your personal firmware for you to download. If you're new to the whole IoT frenzy and ESP8266 in particular I recommend the following two tutorials for starters:
